| american society. Although only 19 percent of americans of high socioeconomic |
| status smoke, 57 percent of their movie counterparts do. |

| A study of top-grossing movies found that movie stars smoke at three times the rate of |
| the audiences watching them. The most frequent users of tobacco were young white |
| men in leading roles who tended to be the heroes. The study author, stanton glantz, |
| said that movies appear to suggest that smoking is normal and even admirable |

| In a study which examined five top films chosen randomly for each year from 1990 |
| through 1996, 57% of leading characters smoked, compared with 14% of people of |
| similar demographic backgrounds in the general population. Fully 80% of male leads |
| smoked. The study, published by stanton glantz in the winter 1998 issue of tobacco |
| control, found that tobacco was used once every three to five minutes, an increase |
| from once every 10 to 15 minutes in movies from the 1970's and 1980's. |
